A special thank you to NetGalley & Macmillion audio for this fantastic ARC!

I love a book that completely surprises me! When the story begins with a mysterious photograph and Luke trying to uncover the truth about his father’s past, I thought I was settling in for a fairly straightforward mystery/thriller about the son of a serial killer. I was very, very wrong. This story is SO much more.

What starts as a mystery slowly unfolds into an immersive blend of horror, fantasy, paranormal thriller, family secrets, identity, and vampires, and I genuinely had no idea where it was going. I actually loved going into the story without knowing the vampire element because discovering it along the way made the experience that much more fun.One of my favorite parts was the use of different perspectives and voices throughout the story. The “monster’s” voice on the audio was particularly fantastic. It was terrifying, unsettling, and completely addictive. It has genuinely haunted me, in the best possible way. And I don't think I’ll ever get the eerie words “We’re Nightjars” out of my head.

There are so many fascinating layers here: family secrets, questions of identity, motherhood, an unborn child, and a young daughter- all perfect for a vampire story. And then there’s the ending. That last chapter absolutely gutted me. Luke’s journey was heartbreaking, and his final description was both horrifying and strangely heartbreaking. Even in the middle of all that darkness, there were moments that made me laugh such as his daughter saying “I hope your mouth will come back.” That combination of horror, sadness, and just a touch of dark humor worked so well. I loved this unexpected blend of horror, fantasy, mystery, and thriller. From the very beginning, the story grabs you and pulls you into this strange, unsettling adventure, and it only gets more bizarre and immersive from there. This is pure haunting fun and, honestly, the perfect book to welcome the Halloween spooky season. If you love atmospheric horror, paranormal mysteries, family secrets, and books that take you somewhere completely unexpected, add this one to your spooky-season TBR.
