The Best of Friends by Lucinda Berry

Whew! This was a rough one.

Let me start with the positives: the writing is good, the story is short & moves quickly, the different character narration is a great way to tell the story, & I would read something else by this author.

Okay, the rough part : the subject matter is really difficult. As a mom of 4…3 which are boys & 1 the same age as the boys in the story, it was really difficult subject matter. The idea of teen’s & their secrets, & drug use & the outcomes was hard. Then, the way the mom’s all acted didn’t seem 100% real. It was rather superficial. I kept thinking how I would act, & all I could come up with was complete devastation & inability to do anything & not care about these other mom’s & friendships. It was just odd. Also, the subject matter felt so dark, yet the overall tone of the book didn’t necessarily carry that. Last, the twist / reveal wasn’t that great & seemed somewhat forced.

I’m not saying it’s a horrible read , but I think of mom of teenage kids will struggle with this.
